I can’t believe Christmas is almost here. Every year, it always feels like it happens so fast and I’m never prepared enough for it. No matter how many times I try to shop ahead and brainstorm gifts for people, I always find myself scrambling to the last minute. Maybe next year will be the year that I’ll be fully on top of it…tbd.
This Christmas is looking a bit different for everyone and as a result, its taken a while for me to get into the Christmas spirit. One way that I’ve tried to get myself in holiday mood is to eat all the festive things. This gingerbread hummus screams Christmas. You get the flavors of cinnamon, cloves, and ginger and the deep sweetness of molasses all in a dessert hummus.
I know what you’re thinking- dessert…hummus?
Yup, it’s dessert but in a hummus. Don’t get me wrong, the chickpeas are there for the texture and the protein, but you can’t taste them at all. I’m sure you’ve seen chickpeas popping up on social media in all sorts of desserts. Here on LGNF, I have made a Chickpea Skillet Cookie and Chickpea Peanut Butter Blossoms. I’ve even made another dessert hummus- a Chocolate Dessert Hummus.
I’m telling ya, don’t be turned off by chickpeas in dessert form. They’re actually, kinda the best. Like I said above, they add an amazing texture and are a good source of protein, so you’ll actually feel fuller from eating less dessert than you normally do. Pretty much, they’re the secret weapon to healthy protein-packed desserts. And dessert hummus is freaking delish- trust me on it!
How to make Gingerbread Dessert Hummus:
The only equipment you need to make a smooth dessert hummus is a good quality food processor (like this Cuisinart Food Processor). A food processor is key to blending your chickpeas to a fine, smooth, batter-like texture.
Here are the ingredients needed to make gingerbread dessert hummus:
- Chickpeas
- Almond butter, all natural and only almonds as the single ingredient (I like the drippy kind best for this recipe)
- Maple Syrup (the real sh*t, none of that fake syrup)
- Molasses– do NOT skimp on this, it’s the one ingredient that will make this hummus taste exactly like gingerbread cookie dough. Plus molasses has many nutritional benefits.
- Vanilla extract
- Cinnamon powder
- Ginger powder
- Ground cloves
- Pinch of salt
Place every ingredient into a food processor and blend, blend, blend until it’s very smooth and silky and you can’t help but dip your spoon in and have a taste.
What do I serve with the gingerbread hummus?
This part is pretty much up to whatever your heart desires. I decided to make it a healthier dessert and serve it with some apples. I also got some cute little gingerbread “babies” (really, that’s what they’re called, I think because they’re…small?) but any cookies work.
Some other options:
- Pretzels
- Cinnamon pita chips
- Pear slices
- Toast
- Oatmeal
